India has achieved a major breakthrough in quantum technology with the successful demonstration of a 1,000 km quantum communication network under the National Quantum Mission, within less than three years of its launch.
The milestone, developed using indigenous technology by QNu Labs, marks one of the longest quantum key distribution (QKD) deployments globally. It highlights India’s rapid progress toward its ambitious goal of building a 2,000 km secure quantum communication network.
This advancement is expected to significantly strengthen secure communication across critical sectors such as defence, finance, and infrastructure. The technology is also designed to function in complex environments, including underwater and underground networks, expanding its real-world applications.
In parallel, the government has expanded support for deep-tech innovation by increasing the number of startups under the mission from 8 to 17 supported ventures. The newly added startups are working across cutting-edge areas such as quantum biosensors, photon sensing, quantum positioning systems, atomic memory, and precision electronics.
Notably, we, Qute Electronics Pvt. Ltd. is among the newly supported startups, contributing to India’s growing quantum ecosystem.
The progress also reflects strong momentum in research and innovation funding. The Technology Development Board (TDB) has received over 100 proposals within just two months, while the biotechnology sector has seen nearly 200 applications, indicating rising industry participation in government-backed initiatives.
The National Quantum Mission continues to position India as a global leader in quantum research and deep-tech innovation, supported by strong policy direction, startup growth, and increasing private sector involvement.
